What is a direct cremation?

A direct cremation, also known as a non-attended or cremation-only service, is simply a cremation that takes place without a funeral ceremony.

Once we are notified that someone has died, we come to collect them and take them into our care. We then complete the necessary arrangements and documentation, organise the cremation and return the ashes to you once everything is complete.

Many people choose direct cremation as it allows them the time and space to plan a meaningful farewell at a later date.

We take care of the cremation, giving you the freedom to remember them in any way you wish.

Everything you need, included for $1,995

Our fixed-price direct cremation package includes the essential care, arrangements and services needed from the time someone dies until their ashes are returned.

Transfer into our care

We arrange transfer from the place of death within our service area, including hospitals, aged care facilities and private homes.

After-hours transfers are included at no extra cost, as are an oversized coffin or second transfer team member if required.

Care before the cremation

The person who has died is cared for professionally and respectfully until the cremation takes place. The service includes mortuary care, a simple dressing shroud and a coffin suitable for cremation.

Care before the cremation

Forms and documentation

We guide you through the forms and authorisations required for the cremation and complete the death registration process.

Private, non-attended cremation

The cremation is conducted privately at an accredited crematorium. There is no funeral ceremony and family members do not attend the cremation.

Return of ashes

The ashes are placed in a standard cremation receptacle and returned within Australia using tracked delivery.

You can use the included container, supply your own urn, or purchase an urn or keepsake separately. There is no expectation to upgrade.

Personal support throughout

You will have someone to contact throughout the arrangement. Our experienced team will explain what is happening, answer your questions and keep you informed from the first conversation until the ashes are safely returned.

Why choose a direct cremation?

A more affordable option

A traditional funeral can include a chapel, funeral vehicles, flowers, printed materials, a celebrant, catering and a more elaborate coffin or casket.

Fewer decisions at a difficult time

When someone has just died, even simple decisions can feel overwhelming. A traditional funeral can require many choices to be made and agreed upon within a few days.

More freedom to remember them your way

Without a funeral service tied to the timing of the cremation, you have greater flexibility.

To create a farewell that feels true to them

Some people simply do not want a traditional funeral. They may have said they did not want a fuss, an elaborate coffin or everyone gathered in a funeral chapel.

Others may not have said it outright, but the formalities and ceremony of a traditional funeral wouldn’t reflect the individual.

Direct cremation gives you the freedom to arrange a separate memorial that better reflects their personality. That might be a relaxed gathering at home, a long lunch, an afternoon at their favourite place or something entirely different.

How Fix Price Cremations works

1

Call us or start online

Contact us on 1300 262 797 or begin the arrangement online.

We will ask for some initial information, confirm that we service the area where the person has died and explain what will happen next.

You can also contact us if a death is expected soon and you want to understand the process in advance.

2

We bring them into our care

We arrange the transfer from the place of death into our professional care.

If the person is in the care of the Coroner, we will explain the release process and arrange the transfer once the necessary authority has been provided.

3

Complete the arrangements from home

We guide you through the information and authorisations required for the cremation.

The arrangement can be completed remotely, so you do not need to visit a funeral home or crematorium. You can speak with us by telephone and complete the required information online from wherever you feel most comfortable.

4

Care and identification

The person who has died is respectfully cared for while the documentation and cremation arrangements are completed.

Identification procedures remain in place throughout the process, from transfer into our care until the ashes are returned to you.

5

The cremation takes place

Once the required documentation has been completed, the person is placed in a simple cremation coffin and cremated privately at an accredited crematorium.

As this is a non-attended cremation, there is no ceremony or family attendance at the crematorium. We can let you know the exact date and time of the cremation if you and your family wish to have a moment of quiet reflection in your own space.

6

The ashes are returned

The ashes are placed in the included container, or an urn you have chosen, and returned by tracked delivery within Australia.

From there, you can keep them, scatter them where permitted, place them in a memorial location or take time before deciding.

In your own words…

Clear pricing without the last-minute extras

A low advertised price is not especially helpful if essential fees are added later.

Our direct cremation package is $1,995 including GST, with no hidden fees for the services listed in the package.

We do not add a surcharge because a transfer is required after hours. We also do not charge more if an oversized coffin is needed or if two members of our team are required to complete the transfer safely.

If you choose an optional product, such as a different urn, keepsake or scattering tube, we will explain the price before you make a decision.

If you live outside our service area, we can discuss options with you and any additional costs - this often works out cheaper than local providers anyway.

You remain in control of what you spend.

Choose how you want to remember them

A direct cremation only means that there is no funeral ceremony before the cremation. How you decide to remember the person afterward is entirely up to you.

Once the ashes have been returned, you might choose to:

Gather family and friends at home

Arrange a remembrance at a favourite restaurant or venue

Scatter the ashes in a meaningful place

Plant a tree or create a memorial garden

Ceramic urn with a leaf pattern beside a vase of white flowers and a lit candle on a wooden side table

Keep the ashes close in a special urn

Share the ashes among family members

Silver teardrop keepsake pendant on a chain, resting on a jewellery box beside white flowers and a candle

Commission memorial jewellery or keepsakes

Place the ashes in a cemetery or memorial location

Wait until you feel ready before deciding

Fixed Price Cremations does not organise a funeral or memorial as part of the direct cremation package. These are ideas that you and your family can arrange independently if you wish.

Direct cremation frequently asked questions

This is one of the most common questions we receive, and it is completely understandable. Identification procedures are followed from the moment the person comes into our care. Their identity is checked against the required documentation before the cremation, and identifying information remains with them throughout the process. Crematoriums follow strict procedures to preserve each person’s identity and keep their ashes separate. These identification checks continue until the ashes are placed in their container and securely returned to you.
What happens first depends on where and how the death occurred. If the person died in a hospital or aged care facility, staff will generally guide you through the immediate requirements. If the person died at home, you may need to contact their doctor or emergency services, depending on whether the death was expected. For accidental or unexpected deaths, you may also have to deal with the Coroner. We can help you with more information and liaison with the Coroner if necessary. You can call Fixed Price Cremations on 1300 262 797 at any time. We will ask a few questions, explain the next step and arrange the transfer when the necessary medical documentation is available.
Yes. “Direct” or “non-attended” describes the type of cremation arrangement, not the standard of care. The person who has died is transferred, identified, cared for and cremated professionally, as they would be for an attended service or funeral service. The main difference is that no funeral ceremony takes place beforehand. This eliminates the costs of third parties such as catering, flowers, and cars, lowering the fees which allows you to spend your money on a ceremony or farewell that better suits you and your loved ones.
No. The $1,995 cost is for a private, non-attended cremation, so family and friends do not attend the crematorium. If attending the cremation or having the coffin present at a service is important to your family, a traditional funeral provider may be more suitable.
Absolutely. You can organise your own memorial, gathering or scattering ceremony before or after the ashes are returned. Because there is no coffin present, you may have greater flexibility when choosing the venue and timing. We can help you with advice and tips, but the organisation of a memorial is not included in the Fixed Price Cremations package.
Timing can vary depending on where the death occurred, the completion of medical and cremation documentation, crematorium availability and whether the Coroner is involved. We will explain the expected timeframe and keep you informed as the arrangement progresses. It is usually no more than a few weeks at most.
Deaths may be referred to the Coroner for many reasons, and a referral does not necessarily mean that anything suspicious has happened. We can liaise with the relevant authorities and arrange the transfer once the Coroner has authorised the person’s release. Our team will explain what can be completed while you are waiting and what happens next.
Yes. Fixed Price Cremations completes the registration of the death. The official death certificate is issued by the relevant state or territory registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
No. You can make the arrangements by telephone and online from home. This is particularly helpful if you live in a different suburb, region or state from where the death occurred.
Please tell Deanna about any jewellery or personal items as early as possible. Items that should not be cremated can be removed, recorded and returned to the family. Some medical devices must also be removed before the cremation can safely take place.
Fixed Price Cremations assists families throughout Victoria, Greater Sydney, and selected areas of southern New South Wales. Enter the postcode where the person has died into our service-area checker to confirm availability or call our team for more information.
Yes. If you are planning for the future, a prepaid cremation plan allows you to record your wishes and lock in today’s price. Prepaid plans are separate from an at-need arrangement for someone who has already died. Learn more about our prepaid funeral services.
